Dara's Story: Lead event coordinator of the event and lost her father to esophageal cancer.

“My father Joseph M. was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in late 2008. Like many others who find out too late that they have this disease, my father suffered from heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion - symptoms that doctors would only prescribe strong antacids for during the course of many years prior to his being diagnosed.

After numerous prescriptions that covered up the real problem, my father’s cancer surfaced after food became lodged against a tumor deep inside of his esophagus one afternoon when we were out having dinner together.

Even though he battled the disease for 2 years and passed away in October 2010, the hopes that other families won’t have to share this same story seems unlikely - as this cancer is taking more lives every year. I’ve joined various esophageal cancer awareness groups on social media to find that a shocking number of fatality stories are similar to mine and that not much has changed in terms of early detection and treatment/surgeries.

After calling several advocacy groups and fundraising race organizations to find out about an event that brings awareness to esophageal cancer, I found that there was a need to generate more attention for this cancer in New York City. In January 2019, I began a partnership with the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation and pursued a 5K race event in Brooklyn’s own Marine Park with a race organization, elitefeats, where I could promote education on the disease and give others the tools to take their digestive health seriously. My hope and goal is for participants and volunteers to help spread knowledge about EC so we can change the stories of the future into those of survival."
